The north Glendale library, the newest of the city's three sites, offers a drive-up window. On average, 2,043 people a month have used the convenience so far in 2008. People order items from home and then go to the drive-up window.
The West Branch Library, under design, should have a drive-up window, too.

But technology is largely the driver making libraries more user-friendly.
At Foothills, 19055 N. 57th Ave., customers can check out books with a self-check machine. In May, more than 64,000 books and other items were loaned this way.
Velma Teague and Main Branch libraries should have similar self-check machines by the end of summer, library spokeswoman Diane Nevill said.
Other conveniences at all city libraries include:
Renew books over the phone or by computer.
Peruse library holdings at www.glendaleaz.com/library.
Read magazines, newspapers and other databases from car-repair guides to genealogy at the Web site.
Read books at the Web site or go to its Digital Media Library to download books, music and videos to a computer or MP3 player. The items automatically disappear on their due date.
