Steady shock
No better time than the present, right? According to Spinner, just under a week after he finished working on his new album, Gregg Gillis–better known as Girl Talk–released said record, All Day via his own Illegal Art label yesterday. Like 2008′s Feed The Animals, All Day is available for free (although you may find some difficulties getting a decent connection on the download site, like I did), either as a series of separated tracks, or as one seamless continuous song (which the site stresses is the way Gillis has intended it to be heard).
So is it any good? Sweet mother of God! It’s bloody amazing! Gillis told Spinner that “I took off most of the summer to really focus my energy on the album — that turns into music all day every day. I enjoy it and it’s addictive. I also had the goal of making this album better than the last one, so I am very intense about the way I work — so there have been a lot of 12-hour days sitting in front of the computer.” All the effort has paid off in spades. Fine Young Cannibals, The Rolling Stones, Modern English, Jane’s Addiction, General Public, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, Portishead, Bananarama, U2 and a motley crew of indie and and classic rock artists get sampled and souped up and supercharged into a mash up that shows no sign of letting up right from the start. It’s not until the brilliant “Imagine” sampling closer “Every Day” that listeners can even catch their breath.
Girl Talk is getting ready to switch gears and get his gear out on the road for a series of live shows through the end of this year and the start of 2011. To get a taste of what the live Girl talk experience is like, check out this video of the 2009 New Year’s Eve show at The Congress, in Chicago.
