New Federal Tobacco Tax Means Michigan Smokers Getting Double Taxed

How Michigan Smokers Will Be Affected by a Double Tax on Tobacco

According to the U.S. Department of Treasury, on April 1st of this year the Federal Government will be raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes from 39 cents per pack to $1.01 per pack. Federal taxes on all tobacco products will be rising dramatically as well. Cigars, snuff, pipe tobacco,
chewing tobacco, rolling tobacco and all rolling accessories will be taking a serious hit. The primary reason given for raising the federal taxes on tobacco products is for expanding low-income children's health insurance.(SCHIP)

Federal tobacco tax increases:

Large cigar tax will go up to about 40 cents per cigar from a nickel per cigar.
Small cigar tax will go up to a $1 per pack from 4 cents.
Pipe tobacco tax from $1.10 per pound to $2.83 per pound.
Chewing tobacco tax from 19.5 cents to 50.3 cents per pound.
Snuff tax from 53.5 cents to $1.51 per pound.
Loose tobacco tax (roll your own) from $1.10 to $24.78 per pound.

In a recent Detroit News article by Chris Christoff, it was noted that Michigan's Governor Granholm also wants to double the Michigan state tax on all tobacco products. (This is except for the already in place $2 per pack manufactured cigarette tax.) These new taxes are being implemented to help balance next years dismal state budget. Once the Legislature approves this, the tobacco items tax will jump from 32% to 64% on wholesale prices.

In Michigan, the folks that roll their own will be getting hit the hardest. With the combined Federal and state tax, the average price of popular rolling tobacco will go up from about $20 per one pound bag to $70 per bag. This will change the total price for rolling your own quite substantially. The current cost for rolling your own is about $1 per pack when buying a one pound bag of tobacco. Once all the taxes go into effect, the price will jump to about $3 per pack.

Granholm suck's! She expects Smokers to pay off the michigan debt? Non Smokers don't have to pay any of that debt at all! This is ridiculous and one sided. If you work hard and are lower income and the only part of life you enjoy is a cocktail and a smoke were going to tax you to death. Michigan needs to get rid of Granholm! I'm already looking for work and moving out of this State. She has totaly Ruined it for Michigan

I am in my 50's and at this rate it"s probaly lucky that I am a smoker. I can't even afford to live to be old.I am still paying my 10 year penalty for buying a house in this state. To bad I wasn't informed of this before I bought.I feel really sorry for young people. When they turn 18 you should run not walk away from this state.I can never even hope to have a retirement like my parents did. What a shame this country has done to everyone. The poor will get poorer and we can never get ahead we'll be taxed to death( literly)

I am a smoker, just went &bought 24 bags today. Will go back before the 1st. Since they can go in the freezer I figured I'll go in debt now so I'll have a stash. As for C. don't buy from out of state through the mail. I already got napped for 2800.00. Now that really sucked, and to beat all the Co. dimed people out like crazy.Thats why I started rolling my own.I bet Granholm drinks since they never raise taxes on alcolhol. At least we're not going to kill someone on the road smoking. All the polititions can get bent. I have decided to never vote again unless it to vote someone out. They are all a bunch of crooks.By the way, there's a site called Topix that says pop is going to have an extra .18 cents extra a can. So I guess the food police will be hitting the stores & fast food next. People we have got to stick together. There needs to be a revolution.Things just can't keep going on like this.If I could sell my place I'd be out of here so fast, I'd never even look back!Drivig to Indiana and

Hi Sharon unopened bags have a long shelf life, and filtered tubes should not be affected by time. Also, you can put the bagged tobacco in your fridge or freezer to help keep it fresh

Yep....Thats good ol Jenny "I'll tax that" Granholm. Trying to make Michigan just like her home country of Canada, where they also have a doubloe tax on everything. She really can't figure out that the more that she raises taxes, the more people leave the state.
